Aoibhneas, Dublin - A refuge from domestic violence for women and children
Day 9 - Sadie

16 Days Against Violence

Sadie’s husband Pat died three years ago. The couple had been inseparable. They had one son Derek who had always been “a bit of a boy-oh”. Derek had never been made to do chores, to pay his share of the bills or hand up money. Since his father’s death his life has not changed. He still works five days a week and spends the evenings and weekends drinking with the lads. He does not appear to notice his mother’s failing health, or no food in the fridge or the house falling into disrepair. He is dismissive of friends and neighbours who voice concern for Sadie, saying she is just “getting old”. It was only when her neighbour arrived one evening with homemade soup that the seriousness of the situation came to light.

.....Is this Domestic Abuse?
