1 in 5 women will experience domestic violence
Since 1996, 204 women have been murdered in Ireland.
In 2013 Aoibhneas Women & Children’s Refuge accommodated 196 women through its Refuge Service.
This represents an increase of 39% (Annual Report, 2013).
In 2013 Aoibhneas Women & Children’s Refuge accommodated 323 children through its Refuge Service.
This represents an increase of 56% (Annual Report, 2013).
In 2013 A Aoibhneas could not accommodate, due to a lack of capacity, 324 women and 481 children who were forced to flee their homes due to Domestic Violence.
80% of women that accessed Aoibhneas Women & Children’s Refuge cited abuse by their partner or spouse.
In 2013, 92% of women upon admission to Aoibhneas Women & Children’s Refuge disclosed emotional abuse (Annual Report, 2013).
This included:
- Being verbally abused.
- Being undermined, ridiculed and put down.
- Being harassed, monitored and stalked.
- Being threatened with physical and sexual assault.
- Being threatened with self-harm, suicide and threats to kill her and / or the children.
- Being told that she is a bad mother, mentally ill, stupid and deserving of the abuse.
- Being prevented from sleeping.
In 2013, 70% of women upon admission to Aoibhneas Women & Children’s Refuge disclosed physical abuse (Annual Report, 2013).
This included:
- Being Beaten.
- Being Bitten.
- Being Punched and Slapped.
- Being Cut / Stabbed.
- Being Strangled / Choked.
- Being Kicked.
- Having hair pulled.
In 2013, 13% of women upon admission to Aoibhneas Women & Children’s Refuge disclosed sexual abuse (Annual Report, 2013).
This included:
- Being raped and sexually abused.
- Being coerced into sex / sexual activity.
- Being forced to have sex with other people.
- Being denied the right to use contraceptive methods.
In 2013, 48% of women upon admission to Aoibhneas Women & Children’s Refuge disclosed financial abuse (Annual Report, 2013).
This included:
- Being denied access to household finances for food, rent, household utilities and clothing.
- Being left in debt.
- Being denied child / spousal maintenance.
- Being denied access to child benefit.
1 in every 8 women have been beaten or abused while pregnant (Abuse in Pregnancy - The Experience of Women, Nov 2000).
60% of people under the age of 25 years reported abuse. (Domestic Abuse of Men and Women in Ireland, National Crime Council & ESRI 2005).
Aoibhneas Women & Children’s Refuge operates an outreach and drop in service to assist and support women and children to remain safely in their homes. In 2013, Aoibhneas Women & Children’s Refuge Outreach and Drop In Service provided practical and emotional support to 121 women (Annual Statistics 2013).
in 2013, there were 13,275 court applications under the domestic violence legislation.
This represents an increase of 5% (Court Services Annual Report 2013).
in 2013, Aoibhneas Women & Children’s Refuge received 2,630 support calls to its 24 Hour Helpline (Annual Report), 2013).
Aoibhneas Women & Children’s Refuge complete Danger Lethality Assessments with clients. Aoibhneas Women & Children’s Refuge launched Escalating Violence How to Respond to Risk in 2008. The research identified risk assessment instruments used within an international context to promote women and children’s safety. Aoibhneas Women and Children’s Refuge adopted the Danger Assessment Model, created byDr. Jacquelyn Campbell.
he Danger Assessment instrument was developed initially as a means of putting women back in control of their situation by increasing their awareness of, and reflection on, their situation. It now also acts as a method of planning interventions The Danger Assessment Scale is a lethality assessment.
Aoibhneas recognises that it is imperative to have an instrument to predict and prevent the risk of suck violence escalating to death / lethality.

16 Days of Action Opposing Violence against Women Campaign 2015
Since 1996 in Ireland 209 women who have been murdered in Ireland. The loss of life represents the loss of a daughter, mother, cousin, aunt, grandmother, niece and friend. Although these women share a life lost, we have an obligation to promote women’s basic rights.
We have an obligation to promote women’s basic human rights by breaking the cycle of domestic violence. Every woman is entitled to live without the fear or threat of violence.
Everyday women and children who experience domestic violence suffer a social and societal injustice. We need to send a strong message that domestic violence is not acceptable in our community.
We need to act now and seek the elimination of all forms of violence.
National Balloon Action 2015
Aoibhneas will join the Annual 'One in Five Women' National Balloon Action in Solidarity with Women Living with Domestic Violence
The Annual ‘One in Five Women’ National Balloon Release is a nationwide solidarity campaign to highlight the levels of domestic violence against women in Ireland. Groups of five balloons, four purple and a single white balloon with the One in Five logo will visually represent the number of women who will experience domestic violence in Ireland.
